Why Do Golf Balls Have Dimples?

When golf balls are flying, I have seen some of them suddenly change direction or divert slightly from the original course. Is this due to a blow on the surface? if the surface is smooth, then the ball will fly smoothly and in the right direction.

    An older ball that might seem true but it isnt the flight much more stable than smooth.

    The bumps creat pocket through the air when hit thats why baseball or basketball any ball it creates less air when hit thats why baseball or basketball any ball cant go as golf ball it creates.
